E ORA, PARLA! (*)

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475- 1564), was an
Italian painter, sculptor, architect and engineer, synonymous with
Renaissance art and culture.
His statue of David (1501-1504), which he sculpted when he was young,
along with his statue of Moses (1544), remain the foremost
seminal pieces of sculpture, even today.

As written in the Holy Books, on his return from Mountain Sinai where
he had gone to obtain the Ten Commandments from God, with the stone
tablets in hand, Moses found his people
worshipping a statue of a golden calf. To describe the frustration and
dissappointment that Moses felt at that moment, Michelangelo is said
to have started to sculpt his statue of Moses.

Five months ago I started to model this dramatic event in my own
sculpture studio. It is believed that after the completion of Moses,
Michelangelo felt that he had reached excellence
in his art; upon doing so, he threw down his tools, fell to his knees,
and struck the statue with his hammer, shouting ''Now speak!'', as he
felt that life was the only thing missing from his masterpiece.

Depicting this extraordinary situation that has been carved in
people's minds for centuries, has been a very effective motivation for
me. It has helped me find time to work on my project and
create extra time in order to complete it. After the low
poly-modelling in Maya, I detailed it substantially in Zbrush.
Completing the 3D models of Moses and Michelangelo has taken almost 3
months, and up to this point I have worked on numerous revisions of
the scene. After the completion of the model I worked more on the
dramatisation elements such as the environment and ambient lighting
effects. I have depicted Michelangelo's studio as a rich setting to
reflect his multidisciplinary talent that reaches almost every aspect
of art. I have paid considerable attention to choosing the furniture
and equipment in his studio in order to reflect that particular era.
At the final stage I used Mental Ray for the render and utilised Shave
and a Haircut to design Michelangelo's hair. Photoshop was utilised
only for the textures and colour correction at the end.

(*)Now speak!
